THE SEWING ROOM - DELVE
After the release of Wormhole’s ‘Chicks Dig Scars’ album lots of bands on the scene in Dublin began to think about the possibility of releasing full length albums on CD. The Wormhole album was good and done on a shoestring. The ‘lo-fi’ ethos was big at the time through Sebadoh, Pavement and others. Indie labels in Dublin up till then had tended to fetishise vinyl releases - particularly 7’ singles. The punk scene was prolific when it came to that kind of thing. The main influential thing I think Dead Elvis did was to forget about singles and vinyl initially and concentrate on releasing good albums.
CD pressing was becoming quite cheap at the time and it made sense to us - particularly when confronted with the amazing tunes Wormhole recorded over a week with Marc - to just go for an album release. I’ll write more about the details of our approach later when I get a bit further into the catalogue. Anyway - The Sewing Room noted what we’d done with some of the first albums and booked time with Marc in the 8 track studio in the basement of 147 to record an album worth of songs. They intended to self-release an album. We thought the recordings were great and asked if they’d like us to press and release the album. They went for it. At that point in time we had little appreciation of the various bands the Sewing Room members had been in previously. However we did quickly note the awe that Stan inspired in some of our contemporaries who were from Dublin and who had been into bands and releases in the 80’s. I liked this song best from the recordings on first listen. It ended up being the third track on ‘And Nico’ which we released in 1995.
